Transit and a Healthier Atlanta: MARTA Means Business in Healthcare

From Saporta Report:  My family spent fall break in San Francisco following the ULI Fall Meeting and we believe it is the only vacation we can remember when we did not gain weight. You know why…. we walked everywhere.  The environment is one where walking is interesting and enjoyable even for my then four-year-old.

It has been over a decade since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared that obesity is the nation’s number one health problem.  More recently, the negative health consequences of a sedentary lifestyle have become widely known and we increasingly hear, “sitting is the new smoking.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, a whole new group of stakeholders – health providers – are focusing on and investing in places and cities that make physical activity an easier choice.  Companies such as Kaiser Permanente are ‘walking the walk’ to encourage an active, healthy lifestyle.  About their planned location within walking distance of the Arts Center MARTA station, “It was important to have a great location with an ability to walk to restaurants and shops and a location that was close to public transportation,” shared Dick Daniels, Kaiser Permanente’s chief information officer.
