From KMOV: Washington Avenue in downtown St. Louis is undergoing a transformation, driven by millions in new investments and development.
The area, once a commercial and garment district, is being eyed once again as a key part of downtown St. Louis.
“I think the more development that goes on, the more people will come, the more people will want to live down here in a walkable neighborhood,” says Shonette Colbert, owner of San Café and Market.
“A lot of times, people come in and they say it feels like a family here,” Colbert says. “There is definitely a sense of community here.”
Just around the corner, Buddy’s Wine Bar and Bistro opened in the space that once housed Farina’s Kitchen & Bar and Mango. Colbert’s café, along with other new businesses, is contributing to the neighborhood’s changing landscape.
“This is a really, a generational opportunity. The amount of opportunity that is down here is fairly unprecedented,” St. Louis developer Alex Oliver says.
