St. Charles City Officials Consider Building Houses for Homeless

From Mid Rivers Newsmagazine: Leaders in St. Charles City are exploring the idea of building housing for the city’s homeless.

At the City Council’s July 21 meeting, a licensing agreement was approved with Eden Village, an organization that helps implement and oversee tiny home communities for the chronically homeless.

This allows the city to do things like planning, evaluating, and site selection with Eden Village.

“What we want to address primarily with Eden Village is unhoused people who have no place to be, no place to go and no hope for the future. That’s not based upon their mental capacity or anything else, it’s just people who’ve been dealt a very poor hand in life and have no refuge,” St. Charles City Mayor Dan Borgmeyer said.

Eden Village is based in Springfield, Missouri, where it operates three tiny home villages, all with fully furnished units, a gate, clubhouse and wraparound services. The organization also oversees about 14 similar communities country-wide.

These 400-square-feet single-occupancy homes are intended to be permanent housing for the once-homeless inhabitants. Residents pay $350 a month for rent and utilities, and must agree to live in a drug- and crime-free community.

Nate Schlueter, chief visionary officer at Eden Village, said this model is meant to be community-driven and provide its residents with a support network.
