The award was presented by the Missouri Department of Higher Education & Workforce Development’s at its Apprenticeship Summit in Sedalia.

Hanneken is a longtime construction educator with Special School District Career and Technical Education. He has been a consistent advocate for connecting students to meaningful careers in the skilled trades. His work has focused on expanding awareness of construction pathways, strengthening industry partnerships, and helping students transition from the classroom to the jobsite.

The award is named for Dr. John Gaal, a respected leader in workforce development and apprenticeship systems, and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a lasting impact on talent development in Missouri’s construction and skilled trades sectors.

Hanneken’s recognition comes as demand for skilled workers continues to grow across the built environment. Employers, educators, and workforce leaders have increasingly emphasized the importance of early exposure, hands-on training, and clear pathways into registered apprenticeships and related careers.

Forum Honors Hanneken May 7

The honor also comes just days before Hanneken will be recognized by Construction Forum at its annual Building Tomorrow Awards luncheon on May 7, where he will receive the Emerging Leader Award. The event highlights individuals and organizations advancing inclusive workforce development and economic growth across the St. Louis region’s built environment.
