From St. Louis Post-Dispatch:  Although it won’t replace the estimated 600 state employees who are departing St. Louis for Chesterfield, Gov. Mike Kehoe is set to open a new office in the city’s downtown core.

Kehoe has scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Old Post Office in the 800 block of Olive Street to unveil his plan to open a satellite office for the governor’s staff and other state officials.

“It’s mainly an office I’m going to use when I am there. Our numbers aren’t going to be huge. It’s more about our presence,” Kehoe told the Post-Dispatch Wednesday.

Kehoe, who took office in January, is facing opposition from city leaders over his push for a state takeover of the St. Louis Municipal Police Department. The maneuver was the subject of several hours of debate in the Senate Tuesday.

At the same time, his administration is moving state workers out of the Wainwright Office Building in downtown to a newly purchased facility in Chesterfield.

The decision, which Kehoe voted for last summer in his former role as lieutenant governor, delivered another blow for downtown St. Louis, which has struggled post-pandemic with departing companies, declining foot traffic and concerns over a lack of public safety.
