From The Telegraph:  Six zoning requests were approved by the Madison County Board at Wednesday’s meeting, with one garnering some discussion.

A request by Cyril and Jane Korte for a setback variance for property on Rinderer Road in Trenton was debated before being approved 23-2, with four members absent.

The couple sought the variance because the shape of the property, and its proximity to a lake and dam, make it difficult to build there. The request was approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning and Development Committee but with numerous restrictions — including an engineering study.

Madison County Board Member Elizabeth Dalton, D-Collinsville, objected to the plan.

“I don’t see how they can build on this property,” she said. “I don’t see how we could possibly approve that.”

She and Don Moore, R-Troy, voted against the request.

Planning and Development Administrator Matt Brandmeyer and several Planning and Development Committee members spoke at length about precautions being taken to ensure no impact to the lake or dam. Brandmeyer noted the property had been previously approved for development, and going back on that could create some liability for the county.

Several board members argued not approving the variance would render the property useless.
