To celebrate the grand opening of its new 626-seat Jubel Center for the Arts, Lutheran South High School hosted a musical event, “Luzopalooza” on Feb. 27.
“We broke ground in May of 2023, so our current freshmen and sophomores have only known our campus under construction,” Lutheran South Head of School Jonathan Butterfield said. “They have never actually walked in the front doors of our school building, so we’re pretty excited to show them how amazing the new part of our school is.”
“It’s a celebration for our community,” Butterfield said. “This only happens because of the excitement of our donors and the families who are choosing to enroll here. It just shows that there’s a lot of life and progress in this part of the county.”
The roughly 43,000-square-foot expansion includes a 626-seat theater that will be available for community use, a coffee shop and spirit store, a green room, music hall, art studio, administrative spaces and a new front entrance. It’s the first major expansion of the school since 1985, and only the second major project at the school since it opened in 1957, Butterfield said.
Two more large projects are in the works for the next few years, including a $12 million STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) center and renovations, and $5 million in planned updates to athletic facilities, Butterfield said.
Russell Construction began work May 3, 2023 on the building. Development of funding began in 2018, as Lutheran South, a private school located on Tesson Ferry in South County, is experiencing record-breaking enrollment levels.
Fox Architects is design architect on the project. Subs include Jarrell Mechanical Contracting; Bell Electrical Contractors; Boyer Fire Protection; Budrovich Companies; KB Walker; Waddell Concrete, Inc.; Kupferer Bros. Ornamental Iron Works; George Weis Company; and Vee-Jay Cement Contracting Co.
