A partial ceiling collapse Tuesday morning at Lincoln Middle School in Edwardsville injured two construction workers and temporarily halted work in the affected area as officials began investigating the cause.
The incident occurred during summer renovation activities inside the nearly century-old school, which is undergoing a major modernization as part of the Edwardsville Community Unit School District 7 bond program.
Workers Injured
According to district officials, five workers were in the area when the ceiling collapsed. Two workers were transported to a local hospital for evaluation, two others declined medical treatment and one worker was not injured. Emergency responders initially received reports that workers were trapped, but all had exited the area before first responders arrived.
District officials said no students or school employees were present in the area at the time of the collapse, as the work was taking place during summer break. Officials also reported there were no serious injuries.
The collapse occurred during ongoing construction on the school’s second phase of renovations, a multi-year project funded through the district’s 2023 voter-approved bond program. Improvements include a new classroom addition, modernization of the historic building, accessibility upgrades, new mechanical systems, structural improvements and other infrastructure work.
S.M. Wilson Not Involved
Following the incident, S. M. Wilson & Co., construction manager for portions of the overall project, issued a statement clarifying that the incident did not occur within its work area.
“As the Superintendent for the Edwardsville Community Unit School District 7 announced, there was a partial ceiling collapse at Lincoln Middle School this morning, June 30,” said Mike Yazbec, president of S. M. Wilson & Co. “We are grateful to hear that there are no reports of serious injuries and that no Lincoln Middle School students or employees were in the area where the incident occurred. Our thoughts are with those affected.
“This did not occur on S. M. Wilson & Co.’s portion of the project site and S. M. Wilson is not contracted with the company involved in the incident. We remain committed to the highest level of site-specific safety protocols on all of our projects.”
District officials said the cause of the ceiling collapse remains under investigation. No information has been released regarding whether the incident will affect the construction schedule for the project.
The Lincoln Middle School renovation is one of the largest capital improvement projects included in the district’s bond program and is designed to preserve the school’s historic character while creating updated learning spaces for future generations.
