From The Edwardsville Intelligencer: The broad, bipartisan housing bill on President Donald Trump’s desk could become law even without his signature. House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed the bill’s forthcoming result.

The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, officially filed as H.R. 6644, aims to lower the cost of expanding housing supply and reduce housing costs. Trump had planned to sign the bill and had scheduled a bill-signing event, but he backed out and said he would not sign it until Congress passes the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote.

“It’s a yawn,” Trump told reporters.

The president’s comments sparked a response from U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, a fellow Republican.

“Mr. President, I don’t know which version of the SAVE America Act you’re referring to, but I am a cosponsor and support the latest version. I don’t know which staffer misled you, but thank you for your attention to this matter,” Cassidy posted on his X account. “(By the way), it’s irresponsible to postpone signing the Housing bill due to the SAVE Act. We need to start delivering relief to people for the high cost of housing ASAP!”

Johnson offered more clarity on the bill’s status.

“He won’t veto the bill,” Johnson said in an exclusive interview with USA Today. “We already know that. He’ll either allow it to just go into law, or he’ll put his signature on it and take partial ownership, and I hope he does the latter.”
