From St. Louis Business Journal: A hotel owner in St. Louis County hopes to build an apartment complex on the same property.
The entity that owns the DoubleTree hotel at 1973 Craigshire Drive in Maryland Heights submitted a zoning application that would change the property’s zoning to allow an apartment building to be built on part of the existing 6.5-acre hotel property, according to city filings.
The apartments would be built in addition to the hotel, which would continue to operate under the plan, said Bob O’Loughlin, chairman and CEO of Lodging Hospitality Management, the owner and hotel operator. The hospitality firm has branched out from hotels and opened an apartment complex, the Porter, at the nearby Maryland Heights mixed-use development where it’s headquartered, Westport Plaza. The success in initial leasing at the 255-unit Porter complex led to the idea that it would make sense to use the excess land nearby at the DoubleTree for a new apartment complex, O’Loughlin said.
Planning is still in the early stages for the apartment complex by the DoubleTree, but it would be a single five-story building with around 160 to 165 apartments, built on 3 acres of the property, O’Loughlin said.
“We’ve got good experience with the one we did, the Porter, and so we have a pretty good idea” of the demand and what it takes to build out an apartment complex of that quality, O’Loughlin said.
