Since 2018, Goley Insulation has collaborated with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) to offer an internship for construction management students. To date, three students have experienced this unique opportunity in Goley’s Dupo-based office.
SIUE’s construction management program blends business and engineering coursework to help prepare graduates for the many facets of a career in construction. Goley Insulation began offering an internship as a way for the program’s students to gain firsthand exposure to a variety of day-to-day operations.
A locally owned and operated business for over 45 years, Goley Inc. also gives interns the chance to explore a diverse portfolio of work, including large-scale commercial jobs, agricultural structures, custom homes and smaller retrofit projects throughout the region.
Goley’s interns support Goley staff members with many tasks, including identifying leads and tracking bid opportunities. Alexander Diel, the current student intern at Goley, says he appreciates the opportunity to gain hands-on experience outside of a classroom. Diel explains that a typical day in his role includes uploading, organizing and scaling plans in the PlanSwift platform and utilizing Dodge, SIBA and Construct Connect to identify leads. He also assists estimators with takeoffs and quotes and communicates with other companies about bids.
“This internship has given me the ability to take classroom knowledge and apply it to projects in a way that expands my knowledge and gives me real-life experience,” says Diel.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the construction management field is expected to grow 10% through 2028. DeWayne Goley, owner of Goley Insulation, says it’s important that companies in the construction field connect with area students so they can have the tools and skills they need to succeed in the industry.
“We believe we can best prepare our future workforce by helping students to explore the opportunities available in our industry,” Goley says. “At Goley, we specifically want to educate them about the many facets of building science and all that we do in our field to help ensure more energy-efficient and sound structures for our customers.”
