From St. Louis Post-Dispatch:  A $1.2 billion plan to revitalize a neglected industrial strip south of downtown has hit a second delay, leading to concerns from city development officials on the project’s future.

St. Louis-based Good Developments Group told the city that, by December 2023, it would have purchased all of the land for the first phase of its ambitious proposal to turn 95 acres south of the Gateway Arch grounds into a new housing, commercial and industrial district.

When it missed that deadline, the city gave it until this past summer. But this week, the company was back in front of a city development board, again asking for an extension.

Board members for the city’s Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority asked at their meeting Tuesday how much land was left to acquire and whether Good Developments would meet the latest deadline.

“There’s no shortage of work to do to get the project in the next phase,” Good Developments partner Mike Fletcher responded. “We’ve acquired the majority of (the land).”

The project, called Gateway South, aims to piece together dozens of properties along the riverfront just south of Interstate 64, an area also known as Chouteau’s Landing. The proposal calls for high-rise residential towers, an entertainment district and an advanced manufacturing center producing construction materials for projects across the country.

The company said it will add thousands of jobs and residents and make St. Louis a construction destination. Project partners recruited some of the region’s most well-known civic leaders, such as the first CEO of the Cortex innovation district, plus a former Washington University administrator, as company representatives when the project kicked off. Last year, high-profile real estate developer Bob Millstone of Millstone Co. signed on as a joint venture partner.
