From West Newsmagazine: The city of Ballwin moved into its new government center site in April 2019. This past June, the city began occupation of its new police station. Now, work on the final piece of the government trifecta has begun.
At the Dec. 11 Ballwin Board of Aldermen meeting, attendees were introduced to potential details of a new public works, parks department facility. The current public works building was constructed in 1968. The parks department building on the same site along the western edge of Vlasis Park was built in 1984.
Just prior to the board meeting, nearly all of the city’s aldermen and some city staff toured of the public works/parks department site. During the meeting, Joe Sweitzer, senior project manager of Navigate Building Solutions, offered a slide presentation that included four specific site options and costs.
City Administrator Eric Sterman added detailed explanations regarding the city’s and project’s financial numbers.
The initial slide displayed Navigate’s scope of work. It noted details of the existing facility and site, staff needs and wants, funding options, and impact on Vlasis Park.
Staff identified five reasons why a new facility is required. They are:
- Address the age and deterioration of existing facilities.
- Provide additional heated storage space to increase the useful life of high-dollar vehicle and equipment.
- Create canopies for existing material storage bins to provide product protection.
- Create new structured canopies for sun and rain protection of vehicles and equipment.
- Create additional administrative space.
