From The Telegraph:  Alton City Council members are scheduled to vote on initially approving the Lovejoy housing project.

At the Alton City Council meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 12, David Gan, who represents Alton Ward 7, referred a motion to the next committee of the whole meeting that would authorize and direct the city to begin negotiations with McCormack Baron Salazar (MBS), a development company based in St. Louis, to build the $27 million project.

Alton’s next committee of the whole meeting is Monday at Alton City Hall, 101 E. 3rd St., at 6 p.m. Representatives of MBS will be there to present their plan to council members.

According to Gan, this vote would be the first step in a long process, as this motion would only give MBS approval to seek out applications for federal funding. If they do get funding, Gan said construction may start within one year, but only if subsequent agreements pass through the city council. In addition, MBS would need to seek planning and zoning approval through the Planning Development Procedure (PDP), which will involve a public hearing and a final approval through the city council.

“Before they (MBS) could go forward with anything, they’d have to come back to the council,” Gan said. “It’s really a long way off.”

Alton Mayor David Goins echoes Gan’s comment and looks forward to hearing what MBS is proposing.
