From The Intelligencer: Residents with homes near the new Station on Main, now under construction at North Main Street, voiced concerns Tuesday about parking, traffic and drainage in that area, where a business district has been proposed.
Thirty minutes before the regular City Council meeting Tuesday, a public hearing was convened on the subject of the business district.
Developers of the project, which is transforming the former public safety building downtown, have requested this district, similar to other developments in the area, such as Park North, Meridian Plaza and Orchard Town Center.
This business district would impose a percentage sales tax on eligible, specific items sold within the district. The taxes would then go to pay for eligible project costs within the project zone.
Jake Zambaldi, director of development programs with Moran Economic Development, attended and led the overview as well as directed questions afterward.
“This project will require significant public infrastructure improvements, such as roadway resurfacing, utility relocation, sidewalk reconstruction as well as extensive reconstruction and remodeling,” Zambaldi said.
Questions arise
The business district boundary would encompass the project boundaries of North Main and West High streets with small part of Abner Place.
Two Abner Place residents came with questions about the project’s effects on their street, which terminates as a cul-de-sac on the project’s north side.
Resident Dan Tang wanted to know what infrastructure plans are in place to address the crumbling sidewalks on East High Street, which is on the project’s south side.
